We love first looks, and they are one of our favorite parts of a wedding day. About 90% of our couples choose to do a first look and they are amazing. The 10% of our brides and grooms that don’t have a first look have an incredible and amazing day too. And that’s what’s so great! It’s a choice you get to make together! We love all of our couples and honor their wishes whether their wedding day has a first look or not. With that said, if it’s been on your mind, we are super excited to hopefully help you decide, and if not, we’ll share a few reasons to have a first look!
You’re investing a lot in your wedding photography experience. One of our first reasons to have a first look is that you’ll receive 40% more photos. And these are the photos that you’ll decorate your first home with. Photos of the two of you sharing one of many special moments on the day of your wedding. With a first look, you make the most out of this large investment and get the most for your money!
You get to spend intimate alone time with your future spouse on your wedding day! Most brides don’t realize when you come down the aisle and totally SHOCK him with your gorgeous-ness, he can’t even tell you how amazing you look. Sure, he can give you a quick hug, or maybe whisper something to you quickly, but that’s it. You’re at the altar, in front of everyone you invited, and your officiant is about to begin your ceremony. The next time you’ll get to talk to each other is 30-40 minutes later after you’ve been pronounced and by then you’ve been staring at each other for all that time and the moment has passed. So, getting some intimate time before your ceremony is another great reason to have a first look.
This reason alone is HUGE! First looks allow you to extend your wedding day! Normally, the wedding day begins when you walk down the aisle, then after the ceremony, you’re rushed through portraits so your guests aren’t kept waiting for introductions and then it’s reception time. With a first look, you’re able to extend your wedding day by three hours! You get to enjoy portraits with family and friends who you love and who have maybe even traveled to be with you on your special day. You’ll ENJOY portrait time instead of rushing through it. And you get to be present with your friends and you can SAVOR these moments.
Our fourth of five reasons to have a first look is that it allows you to be TOGETHER and alone on your wedding day. When we had our first look we cried and laughed and cried A LOT more. And that put us in the perfect mood for our romantic bride and groom portraits. On a wedding day without a first look, there will be time for husband and wife portraits, usually around sunset. And those are beautiful, don’t get us wrong. But they are also towards the end of your wedding day. After you’ve been through your ceremony, family formals, introductions, and some of the reception time.
Bride and groom portraits happen right after your first look. Your makeup was just finished and you saw yourself in a mirror literally less than 10 minutes ago. You’re primped, sprayed, and looking your best! So, you’re alone together for your first look and then you get the next half an hour or so to love on each other and be present in a time you’ll never want to forget. And we always capture some super sweet moments during this time!
A GREAT reason to have a first look is if you’re nervous. Having a first look can diminish those fears of being the center of attention. Typically, because you’ve been with each other for the first half of the day you’re feeling comfortable and excited to get married, not nervous. Being the center of attention switches from a scary thing to an exciting thing because you’re doing it together, and at the end of it, you’ll be married!
