Michael stands up and buttons his tux’s jacket. He pulls his shirt sleeves down towards his wrists so his father’s cufflinks can be seen, and he walks around the sweetheart table to the side his bride is on. As he reaches for her hand, Betsy smiles up at him and carefully sets her bouquet on the table making sure to display the blooms towards the stage. She takes her husband’s hand as they walk to the stage.
The sounds of family and friends’ laughter and conversations subside as Michael reaches for the microphone. With his new spouse standing beside him, he takes a deep breath and begins his speech. Betsy is an active member in the ASL community so she starts to sign, interpreting everything he says.
He thanks their guests for coming to celebrate their Brandview Ballroom wedding with them. He turns to face his bride’s parents, and thanks them for being so welcoming and for accepting him into their family. As he turned to face his own mother, he thanked her for her support in his life and for loving Betsy like a daughter.
Suddenly he paused, and slowly passed the microphone to his wife of only a few hours. He took a deep breath and raised his hands. Everyone was proudly surprised when Michael began signing a message of thanks as Betsy spoke aloud for their guests. While speaking, her bouquet rested on their sweetheart table. The white of her mother’s wedding dress incorporated into her bouquet looked as beautiful that night as her mother did as a bride years ago. And it was in those moments, with her bouquet resting on the table and while Michael was signing, that his father’s watch caught the light from the chandeliers above their heads and shined for a brief second, as it probably did countless times when his dad was wearing it.
But we know that for Betsy & Michael, their story is about more than a mother’s wedding dress in a bouquet, and a father’s watch and cufflinks. Their story is about how their beautiful old legacies are helping them create their brand new one. Together.
Betsy & Michael, from the first time we heard your story almost a year ago, we fell in love with your personalities and your hearts. We knew we couldn’t be the only ones to think that you were incredible blessings to your communities and two of the most selfless people we know. And we weren’t. All night long, everywhere we went, we heard your family and friends telling each other how perfectly your hearts matched and belonged together.
We are so excited to see what you’ll do in your married adventures. From the bottom of our hearts, congratulations! You’ve been a blessing to our lives, and we know we’re better people for knowing you.
